The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Last weekend I was able to attend the Mrs. Maisel x Amazon x Carnegie Deli pop up which was the cutest interactive pop up so far this month. Amazon produced this event to promote the second season of the show which premiered this month as well. This pop up was only open for 1 week people so tiks went quickly! I have not seen the show as of yet but after visiting the experience I have added it to my weekend binge watch list.
I received an email notification (can’t reveal my sources lol) and RSVP’d right away before letting my coworker know about it. The pop up was going to be a diner from the show set in 1958 and made to appear as a diner. The amazing thing about the diner was that they were going to serve the real deal sandwiches that people remember from Carnegie Deli. Anybody who is anybody from NYC knows about the legendary Carnegie Deli and was sad to see it close down but for one whole week sandwich lovers based in the city could get their fill.
Once directed to the website to make my reservation there was also a menu that included items priced at 99 cents. I couldn’t believe it at first and thought that the menu was just for show but I later found out that those were the real prices. I was ecstatic, you could get one sandwich for 99 cents, an original black and white cookie for 50 cents and a Dr. Brown’s soda for 50 cents, I had to go! I hit up my two pop up ride or die friends lol and we agreed to go on opening day for 2 PM. After securing our spot I tried to find more info online but I knew I wouldn’t find much until closer to the date.
Saturday arrived and I woke up and got ready so we could be on time since we were given notice that if we arrive 15 minutes after the reservation we would lose our place. When my friend and I pulled up in the Uber we could not believe our eyes, the line was down the block, wrapped around the corner and down that block as well. Supposedly that was the line for the wait list, thank God that I secured a resy. We made our way to the front of the line and I asked one of the security guards about the line for reservations and whew, the line for that was only about 6 people long, I thanked him and we got in line.
Once in line we had a bit of a wait but no more than 30 mins in which time we noticed the setup outside with 3 vintage cars, a vintage bike and an actor playing a delivery boy. A woman from the wait list line did ask how we secured our spot and after letting her know we asked her how long they were standing in line to which she responded two hours! Our wait was nothing compared to hers so I had no complaints. Before we were let in I noticed a sign that said people could only order one sandwich, one sweet and that there was only a 30 min seating time for each party, cool with me as long as I got to try.
Finally, we were ushered in and after giving my name we were shown to our table and soon approached by our waiter. We all pulled our phones out to record and then he asked us what we were doing, after realizing that it was 1958 inside we explained that there was a camera inside of our phones while we shared a laugh. We asked for a bit to look through the menu which had the following items;
The Maisel Sandwich: ……………………………………………………………………………….. 99 cents
· Pastrami, Salami, cole slaw, and special sauce on rye bread
The Susie Sandwich: …………………………………………………………………………………. 99 cents
· Turkey, cole slaw, and special sauce on rye bread
Mini Knish …………………………………………………………………………………………………. 75 cents
Black and White Cookie ………………………………………………………………………… 50 cents
Cheesecake ……………………………………………………………………………………………… 50 cents
Pickles ………………………………………………………………………………………………………. 50 cents
Water ………………………………………………………………………………………………………… Free!
Dr. Brown’s Soda …………………………………………………………………………………….. 50 cents
Iced Tea ……………………………………………………………………………………………………. 50 cents
Coffee ………………………………………………………………………………………………………. 50 cents
We all decided to try The Susie and I ordered Iced Tea, while my two friends went for the “Dr. Brown’s Celray” soda. Now the celery flavor of Dr. Brown’s was the only flavor available in 1958 so it was cool to taste and it wasn’t bad once you got used to it. Our sandwiches were REALLY good, it had nice, thick turkey and surprisingly as I am not a fan of cole slaw I didn’t mind it. For desert we all ordered a black and white cookie, but as I watched the cheesecake being delivered to other guests I wouldn’t have minded that at all because it was huge slice. I asked for a bag to take my cookie home, because I didn’t care to eat it there and the bag was really cute lol. After we got our bags, they gave us the check, and while I was prepared to pull out my card, the waiter told us our meal was on Midge Maisel! We got everything for free! They weren’t allowed to take tips but we could donate to Lower East Side Girls Club, which my friend did before we took pics in the photo booth.
On our way out we took pics in front of the vintage cars which was awesome before we made our way home. This was such a cool event and we had a great time being taken back to the 50’s. The pop up is over now and if you didn’t get in, I feel really bad because it was great. Always keep your eyes peeled as I am sure there is more to come.
